Bobcats
About 6 months ago, Mrs. Riddle, our neighbor called and said that a bobcat had attacked her chickens. Now, we finally have got one of the bobcats, but there is still another one.
When Mrs. Riddle first called and said she had a bobcat on the property, I was relieved to realize that we hadn’t let our chickens out yet. I went home and got my shotgun and went over to her house. I met up with her son-in-law and we took after it. We never found it, but we knew it was around.
Since then we have lost 3 of our chickens to it, and Mrs. Riddle has lost some too. We have been keeping a watchful eye.
So about a week ago, I was in my office, and I got another call from Mrs. Riddle saying that some more of her chickens were being attacked. I went to the house and got the shotgun again. This time she said that she watched it run behind some of our domes behind the office. Javier Chaire, an employee of ours, located it hiding under one of the portable domes. By then, we were joined by Mrs. Riddle’s grandson Josh. Josh stayed on their side of the fence, and I stayed on our side. Javier scared it out.
I hit it once in the hind quarters with a 00 buck shot from about 20’, and I was surprised to see it get back up and take off running. I shot it again after it had ran away from me, but it was Josh that finally took it down. Two shots from him, it finally stopped running.
Josh wanted to take it to get stuffed, and I obviously agreed. I don’t think Tessa would like me to have that kind of stuff in our house.
We don’t like to kill animals like that, but when they cut into our chickens, they are open game. We are going to get a trap for the other one.
